One of my family’s favorite meals is Chicken Ouzi Rice, an aromatic dish featuring basmati rice, spiced beef, and tender chicken. I usually prepare this on weekends; it’s hearty and satisfying without requiring too much fuss. The spices blend beautifully, creating a layered flavor that my family loves. One thing I’ve learned is to let the rice simmer fully; if you lift the lid too soon, it could turn out mushy.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups basmati rice
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
  • 1.5 cups chicken broth
  • 4 tablespoons corn oil
  • 0.5 pound ground beef
  • 2 teaspoons mixed spices
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 teaspoon black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 0.5 teaspoon turmeric
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons flour

Instructions

  1. Heat the corn oil in a deep pot over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until the onion softens.
  2. Add the ground beef and season with mixed spices, cinnamon, salt, black pepper, cardamom, turmeric, and cloves. Cook until the meat is browned and fragrant.
  3. Stir in the rice, mixing it with the meat mixture. Then add salt and chicken broth, stirring gently.
  4. Cover the pot and bring it to a boil on high heat for a few minutes, then lower the heat and let it simmer until the rice is cooked.
  5. For the chicken sauce, melt butter in a wide pan. Add flour and stir until it turns golden brown.
  6. Gradually add the chicken broth, whisking to avoid lumps. Stir in mixed spices and salt, cooking until the sauce thickens.
  7. In a serving dish, layer the toasted nuts, shredded chicken, and rice. Press it down gently to mold it.
  8. Invert the ouzi onto a serving plate and serve hot with the chicken sauce.

What I Notice When Cooking

  • The aroma from the spices fills the kitchen, making it feel warm and inviting.
  • Rice should be fluffy; if it’s too wet, it loses its texture and tastes gummy.
  • This dish is great for gatherings; it feeds a crowd and can be prepped in advance.

Small Adjustments

  • Make sure to let the rice rest before serving to allow it to set.
  • Keep an eye on the sauce; stirring prevents it from sticking or burning.
  • Try adding vegetables like peas or carrots to the rice for a colorful twist.

Storage and Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days. To reheat, gently warm it in a pot, adding a splash of chicken broth to keep it moist.

Nutritional Notes

This dish comes in at approximately 600 calories per serving, providing a good mix of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. It’s quite filling, making it a satisfying choice for lunch or dinner.
